The historian Josephus says Midian is a geographical location in the northwest Arabian Peninsula on the east shore of the Gulf of Aqaba on the Read Sea. Ptolemy and Eusebius mention an area near modern-day el-Bed which may be synonymous with Midian. The area was named after Midian, the son of Abraham and his wife Keturah. Midianite pottery dating back to 1,400 BC has been found at various sites stretching from the southern Levant to northwest Saudi Arabia.
