Aretas IV Philopatris was the King of the Nabataeans from about 9 BC to 40 AD. His daughter was married to and divorced from Herod Antipas. Herod then married his brother’s wife, Herodias. It was opposition to this marriage that led to the beheading of John the Baptist. After Aretas received news that Herod had divorced his daughter, he invaded Herod’s territory and defeated his army. Aretas ruled over Damascus at the time of the conversion of Paul.
