The Akkadian language is the oldest recorded Semitic language and was a common language in the ancient Near East until around 800 BC. Mesopotamia’s most important texts were written in Akkadian. Some Akkadian texts are similar to biblical texts and have helped shed light on the meaning of obscure Hebrew words.
