What the story means to us today

The importance of Moses’ genealogy

The story appears to some as an unnecessary sidebar, an interruption to the primary narrative (Moses leading the Israelites out of captivity). However, it is important to delineate who the participants in the story were and how they came to be.

Only the first three families of Jacob are listed. After Levi, the listing stops. This is because the priestly tribe of Levi is the clan Moses and Aaron descended from. There is no need to delve further into Jacob’s familial line beyond Levi.

From the genealogical listing, we can see that God’s task to Moses may not have been assigned based on Moses’ ability, but more based on the priestly family he was born from – Levi.

Additional thoughts and considerations

Why was it important to include Moses’ genealogy in the Bible?

The genealogy presented in these verses shows that Aaron and Moses descended from Levi, the family line that was assigned priesthood. This reveals the priestly family was critical to God’s plan.

Why was Aaron’s family listed but not Moses’?

It is unclear why Moses’ family was not listed as prominently as Aaron’s. Possibly it is because Moses’ wife, Zipporah, was not a Hebrew.

Why is Izhar’s family listed in more detail that the others?

Ishar’s family is notable for his first son, Korah, In Numbers, we find that Korah rose up against Moses and was subsequently “swallowed up by the earth” for his insubordination. Regardless of his failure, his sons rose to become “directors” in the clan, leading the Israelites in worship and praise. We find several of their musical compositions in Psalms.

A merger of clans

Barely noticed in the genealogy is the merging of the tribes of Judah, the kingly tribe, with Levi, the priestly tribe. Mentioned in these verses is Aaron’s wife. Elisheba, his father-in-law, Amminadab, and his brother-in-law, Nahshon. All belonged to the family of Judah. Thus, Aaron’s priestly clan is merged with the kingly tribe of Judah in a manner that impacts Jesus’ lineage.
