The event called The Rapture is familiar to most Christians. It has been portrayed in many movies and most churches today teach the concept. The Rapture is an event in which all Christians will be removed from the earth and transported to heaven. It is typically believed to occur years before Jesus’ second coming and it’s typically thought will take place in secrecy (i.e., to the people of Earth, Christians will simply vanish). It’s a belief (“dispensationalism”) that emerged in Christianity only within the last 200 years.
What does the scripture say about the event called “The Rapture”?
Surprising to some, the Bible does not specifically mention the Rapture – the word itself does not appear anywhere in scripture. However, many verses could be interpreted as describing such an event. For instance, Jesus said there would be “two men in the field; one will be taken and the other left behind.” But this verse could also reference Jesus’ second coming, an entirely separate event in dispensational thinking. Or it could be a metaphor for the ramifications of a sinful life. Thus, we have various Christian beliefs with regard to the Rapture.
How does the Rapture fit with prophecy?
There are various potential timelines within which the Rapture could take place. One popular timeline looks like this:
- The Rapture will be an early event – the first phase of two.
- All Christians, dead and alive, will be taken to heaven.
- Next, a period of seven years of tribulation will take place on Earth.
- Christ will then return to earth and rule for one thousand years (the second phase).
- After 1,000 years, unbelievers will be judged.
- Finally, Satan will be condemned to Hell.
Although the above is a commonly cited timeline of events, biblical prophecy can be interpreted in many ways. For instance, some believe the Rapture will not take place until the end of the 7-year tribulation (after step 3).
When will it take place?
Most Christians believe the bible teaches an event we call the Rapture. The open question, however, is at what point in the prophetical timeline will the Rapture take place.
Prophecy is not intended to be a roadmap of the future. It’s a description of events told in coded terms that will become apparent when the events begin to unfold. Thus, it would be best to consider the Rapture as one possibility but leave other possibilities open for interpretation. After all, the most important task is to ensure you are ready for God’s return to earth – the timing is irrelevant.
What will the rapture look like?
Most Christians believe the rapture will be a supernatural event in which all Christians simply vanish. Others believe it will be a spectacular exit from Earth, with millions of Christians rising from the earth into the sky. A more likely explanation is that it takes place in plain site and nobody notices. For instance, in the 2020 Wuhan/COVID-19 virus, the South Korea breakout originated in a Christian church and spread throughout the region. Thousands died. Most were elderly, an age group with strong Christian beliefs. Yet nobody considered they were taken in a “rapture” type event (instead, the church was blamed for starting the outbreak).
