Titus was Roman emperor from 79 to 81 AD.  Prior to becoming emperor, Titus gained renown as a military commander during the First Jewish-Roman War.  When Vespasian was declared Emperor on July 1, 69 AD, Titus was left in charge of ending the Jewish rebellion.  In 70 AD, he besieged and captured Jerusalem and destroyed the city and the Second Temple.  After being regarded as a bad ruler, Titus came close to committing suicide.  After only two years in office, he died unexpectedly of a fever on September 13, 81 AD.  he was succeeded by his younger brother, Domitian.
