Shechem is both the name of the son of Hamor and a place name of the city in the hill country of Ephraim in north central Palestine. The city, led by Hamor and his prince son Shechem, was built on the slope of Mount Ebal where main highways and ancient trade routes converged. It was an important city long before the Israelites occupied Canaan. It was destroyed by Jacob’s sons in an act of revenge for the rape of their sister Dinah.
