Cherubim (or cherubs) are angel-like beings or “class” of angels.  They were first introduced in Genesis 3:24 as guardians on the east side of the Garden of Eden. Each held a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life. Mentioned over 90 times in the Old Testament, they are often associated with God’s presence and act as guardians of sacred spaces. They are typically depicted with the body of a lion, the wings of a bird, and the face of a human.
