Jerusalem, located on a plateau in the Judean Mountains between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea, is considered holy to the three major Abrahamic religions—Judaism, Christianity and Islam.  Jerusalem has been sacred to the Jews since King David proclaimed it his capital in the 10th century BCE.  Christianity reveres Jerusalem for its history and significance in the life of Jesus (Jesus was brought to Jerusalem soon after his birth).
