The Rapture

The event called The Rapture is familiar to most Christians. It has been portrayed in many movies and many churches today teach the concept. The Rapture is the event when all Christians will be removed from the earth and transported to heaven. It is typically believed to occur years before Jesus’ second coming and it’s typically thought will take place in secrecy (i.e. to the people of Earth, Christians will simply vanish). It’s a belief that emerged in Christianity only within the last 200 years. The theological term for this system of belief is “dispensationalism”.

What does the scripture say about the event called “The Rapture”?

Surprising to some, the Bible does not specifically mention the Rapture – the word itself does not appear anywhere in scripture. However, there are many verses that could be interpreted as describing such an event. For instance, Jesus said there will be “two men in the field; one will be taken and the other left behind”. But this verse could also reference Jesus’ second coming, an entirely separate event in dispensational thinking. Thus, we have various Christian beliefs with regards to the Rapture.

How does the Rapture fit with prophecy?

The RaptureThere are various potential timelines within which the Rapture could take place. One popular timeline looks like this:

1. The Rapture will be an early event – the first phase of two.

2. All Christians, dead and alive, will be taken to heaven.

3. Next, a period of seven years of tribulation will take place on Earth.

Advertisements

4. Christ will then return to earth and rule for one-thousand years (the second phase).

5. After 1,000 years, unbelievers will be judged.

6. Finally, Satan will be condemned to Hell.

Although the above is a common cited timeline of events, biblical prophecy can be interpreted in many ways. For instance, some believe the Rapture will not take place until the end of the 7-year tribulation (after step 3).

Will there be a Rapture and when will it take place?

Most Christians believe the bible teaches an event we call the Rapture. The open question, however, is at what point in the prophetical timeline will the Rapture take place.

Attempting to interpret prophetic scripture can be a risky endeavor. Interpreting events before they occur can lead to misunderstanding and over time, the interpreter may solidify his analysis and begin to assume that their interpretation is the only valid interpretation.

Prophecy is not intended to be a roadmap of the future. It’s a description of events told in coded terms that will become apparent when the events begin to unfold. Thus, it would be best if we consider the Rapture as one potential possibility but leave other possibilities open for interpretation. After all, he most important task is to ensure you are ready for God’s return to earth – the timing is irrelevant.
